The demoness tried to attack them but was shot dead by Sanzo, who lost
conscious seconds later. Hakkai then realized that the legend of eating
Sanzo’s flesh was a myth and soon focused his attention on the sand downpour.
Analyzing what they did in the prison, Hakkai analyzed that they had probably
destroyed the center wall that supported the entire building structure. Then, a
door burst opened with tons of sands pouring in. Goku immediately closed it,
panting. Hakkai suddenly remembered the Sutras of Heaven and Earth and began
looking for them. However, he only found Sanzo’s Sutra.
Sand was pouring in fiercely and Hakkai’s barrier was weakening. When it
seemed that they were at their end, a fiery wind came, exposing the entire area
to the surface. Hakkai looked out and saw Hakuryu flying towards him. Goku was
still worried because Sanzo was still unconscious. Then, Kougaji & Dokugaji
shown up. Kougaji said he didn’t come to rescue them but he was fully aware
that the whereabouts of sutra of Heaven & Earth that the demoness took was
impossible to find since it could be anywhere in the desert. At least, they
still could have Sanzo’s sutras. Kougaji then challenged Goku to a fight. If
Goku win, they could take their Hiryu and bring Sanzo to the nearest village for
medicinal treatment. If he wins, Sanzo’s sutra belongs to him.
Gojyo took upon himself to fight Dokugaji but Goku hesitated to fight
Kougaji because the fight would lessen Sanzo’s chances of survival. Hakkai
offered to look after Sanzo for him since now Goku finally had the understanding
of what was it like to fight for somebody. Like him, Kougaji had a heavy burden
upon his shoulders in protecting those important to him. Goku decided to take
off his headband and asked Hakkai to change him back to normal as soon as
possible. While Goku changed to his demonic form, he remembered meeting Sanzo,
Hakkai, Gojyo and someone else before, maybe years ago before his imprisonment
in Mt. Gogyo. As expected, Kougaji was no match for Goku despite his usage of
his netherworld demons.
Back at Botou Castle,
Dr. Ni told Hwang that people live simply for themselves till the day they die. top

Dokugaji tried to help Kougaji but ended up unconscious. Gojyo also tried
but his effects were futile. Hakkai barely managed to dodge but couldn’t place
the headband on his head. In the end, everybody was lying unconscious. The
insane Goku was about to slice everyone to bits when he heard a gunshot. It was
Sanzo. Hakkai’s fears increased because Sanzo was taking the risk of allowing
the poison to circulate faster in his body.
Sanzo dared Goku to attack him. Goku did so and fell into Sanzo’s trap. By
using his sutras of Heaven & Earth, Sanzo was able to restore Goku to his
normal self. Goku fainted. Sanzo quietly remarked him as a stupid monkey and
lost conscious. The recovered Dokugaji decided to withdraw and took the
unconscious Kougaji with him. However, he told Hakkai that he would never
forgive them. Hakkai understood and watched them leaving. Then, he asked Hakuryu
(who was still weak under the burning heat of the sun) to transform into a jeep.
Hakuryu agreed.
While driving back to the villager, Hakkai was losing conscious and his
vision were blurring. Gojyo offered to take over.
3 days later, Sanzo awoke after his nightmare about the desert demoness who
believed he was a mere mortal. Sanzo clutched his fist in rage at his weakness.
Hakkai was sitting next him, calmly remarking that at least Sanzo was strong
enough to recover from the poison. Luckily for them, a boy from the nearest
village had found them. If it weren’t for him, they would be dead by now. In
another room, Goku was apologizing to Gojyo for injuring him. Gojyo ignored him
and nonchalantly said he couldn’t be killed so easily. Besides, he would
rather die in the arms of a beautiful woman. Hakkai entered and told them that
Sanzo was awake. Goku was extremely reluctant to see him because he knew Sanzo
would be very furious with him.
Just as soon he said that, Sanzo appeared. In a very soft voice, Sanzo asked
Goku to bring him a can of beer. Goku did so. Sanzo patted his head. All seemed
well till Sanzo took out his white fan and began to hit Goku with it, scolding
him a reckless stupid monkey. Still, Goku didn’t mind about it and he
laughed happily. top

23: Scapegoat（服従の代価）
The foursome arrived at a villager where a ‘parade’ was held. They knew
something was wrong from the solemn and fearful expressions from the
villagers’ faces. An elder approached them and told them they had to sacrifice
a chaste maiden to the demons who lived on the mountain castle every year. If
they don’t, the demons would not provide the water they needed. Even if they
wished, it would be still impossible since the village was surrounded by the
desert. The foursome continued to watch the parade till the maiden lifted her
head. Hakkai gasped because she looked a lot of his late wife, Kana. Still under
the painful memories of her death, Hakkai stepped in and stopped the parade. The
villagers were upset of his interference and a fight broke out. Luckily, Sanzo
shot a bullet in the air and demanded to be brought to the mayor of the village.
At the mayor’s house, the mayor refused to discontinue the parade because
he couldn’t take the risk of endangering the villagers. Hakkai found it
extremely ironic that they sacrificed their own people for their own safety. The
woman (Houfa)’s fiancé agreed with him but he’s afraid of the demons.
Hakkai mocked at his ‘love’ for Houfa. A brawl nearly broke out again but
this time, Houfa, begged them to stop. She broke down, crying, saddening Hakkai.
Later, Hakkai told Sanzo, Goku & Gojyo that he couldn’t help interfering
because Houfa looked so much like Kana. Upon hearing this, they decided to help
him.
Houfa was placed in the village square where she awaited for the demon
henchmen to bring her to the castle. She took out a dagger and was about to
commit suicide when Hakkai appeared. Houfa couldn’t understand Hakkai’s
intentions for helping her. Hakkai indirectly told her about his past & his
understanding of the pain of being unable to protect his loved ones. Suddenly,
Houfa hugged him, thanking him over and over again. Hakkai nearly hugged her but
stopped and requested Houfa to cook them a meal when they returned. Goku, at the
word, ‘food’, jumped out his hiding place. Instantly, Gojyo & Sanzo beat
him up for exposing them.
Later at night, the demon henchmen came and took Houfa away to the castle.
During the journey, Gojyo sneaked in from behind and caught one of the guards.
Wearing the henchman’s clothes, Gojyo slipped into the castle. Much later, 2
bodyguards spot Sanzo and Goku walking towards the castle. Immediately, the
demon henchmen came out and attacked the duo. Gojyo watched them for a while
before proceeding on to the castle rooftop where the cannon was placed.
Apparently, the plan was while Goku & Sanzo create a diversion, Gojyo would
go and destroy the cannon. As for Hakkai, he would personally deal with the
demon mastermind. Though the demon mastermind was fooled by Hakkai’s disguise
as Houfa, Hakkai’s laser beams seemed to have no effect on him (since he kept
on bursting into tiny bats before rejoining himself).
Back at the village, Houfa persuaded the villagers to help the foursome.
The foursome was very occupied with their individual opponents. Luckily for
them, the villagers came, helped them defeat the demons and destroyed the
cannon. Inside, Hakkai told the mastermind that the sound of the destroyed
cannon meant the freedom of the villagers. He blasted another laser beam. Once
more, the mastermind burst into tiny bats. But this time, during the rejoining
period, Hakkai released another laser beam and annihilated him. The villagers
were grateful to the foursome for teaching them to stand up for themselves.
Instantly, Goku begged Houfa (who treated Hakkai’s injuries) for food.
Gojyo teased him but ended up quarreling with him. Sanzo, very irritated, hit
them both with his white fan (be prepared to see this scene over & over
again). top

Dr Ni had created a
mysterious and evil intention….
Dr Hwang had another dispute with Dr Ni till he shown her his newest
invention, a queen bee machine. With it, he intended to find Sanzo’s
whereabouts. For the foursome, they arrived at a town where its water supply was
at its worst. Gojyo was sent out to find food and cigarettes. He reluctantly did
so, dragging Goku with him.
After walking for some time, Gojyo & Goku saw a woman begging food from
a shopkeeper, who roughly pushed her aside. Gojyo, not liking to see women
bullied, stepped in. At the sight of Gojyo’s red hair & eyes, the
frightened shopkeeper quickly gave food rations to the woman and shut the door.
The woman took them and ran away before Gojyo could say anything. Later, Gojyo
& Goku found her resting under a tree. Gojyo decided to approach her and
Goku decided to return to the inn. The woman introduced herself as Yang Ming,
including her baby son who also had red hair & eyes. Gojyo was shocked for
the baby was a half demon half human like himself.
At the inn, Hakkai overheard the innkeeper’s conversation with a
shopkeeper about seeing a red haired taboo man with a woman. Goku returned and
told Hakkai & Sanzo that Gojyo’s flirting with a woman. Hakkai smiled
knowingly at Sanzo. Yang Ming told Gojyo that her lover was a demon who had gone
berserk some time ago and disappeared. Initially, the villagers left her in
peace till she had given birth. Everyone knew that a half demon half human child
was an evil taboo and all wanted to get rid of her. Despite the ill treatment,
Yang Ming refused to leave because she wanted to wait for her lover to return.
At that moment, the villagers appeared. As usual, they blamed Yang Ming for
giving birth a taboo child.
Dr Ni had been watching the entire scene through his queen bee. Rather
devilishly, he programmed another bee machine to sting Yang Ming on the back of
her neck. Yang Ming began to scream and transform into a bee demoness, releasing
her anger & hatred upon the villagers. Goku, (with Hakkai & Sanzo)
arrived at the scene and attacked her. Gojyo stopped him, saying Yang Ming was
never a demon. The possessed Yang Ming wished that she hadn’t given birth to a
taboo child and decided to kill him. Gojyo, using himself as shield, protected
the baby, rebutting that no mother would kill her own child. At that moment,
Yang Ming’ baby cried. Sanzo finally understood Yang Ming’s situation.
Hakkai spot the bee machine on Yang Ming’s neck and wanted to help Gojyo.
However, Gojyo insisted to fight on his own despite his injuries.
Yang Ming charged towards Gojyo. A cloud of dust. Hakkai became very worried
about Gojyo’s safety. When the dust cloud cleared, Hakkai found the crushed
bee machine in Gojyo (who lost conscious)’s hand. As for Yang Ming, she was
restored to her human form. She too, lost conscious but there was a smile on her
face. Sanzo quietly remarked that people do reckless things to protect someone.
Much later, Yang Ming decided to leave the village in search of her lover.
As for Dr Ni, he threw away his bee machine much to Dr Hwang’s delight. top

The foursome was traveling to the west as usual till a huge boulder came
(literally from the sky) crashing down, blocking the foursome. It was done no
other than the bubbly Lilin. Instantly, the foursome drove away. Lilin was very
displeased, sat down and thought of another ambush strategy.
On a field, the foursome was driving peacefully till they found a huge plate
of pork buns lying on the ground. According to Lilin, she hoped that the
foursome would be so absorbed in eating the pork buns that she would able to
attack them off guard. Unluckily, the foursome avoided the temptation and drove
away. Lilin sighed & noticed the plate of pork buns was moving strangely by
itself. Lilin chased after it and caught the culprits (3 demons). After giving
them a beating, she forced them to be her followers with their ‘special
names’ – Poochi, Pee-chan & Tama.
The doomed trio did a lot of ridiculous things to trick the foursome (like
attempting to vandalizing the jeep & dressing up as women). However, the
foursome was not very stupid to fall for such childish plays and the trio always
ended up with bruises. Out of desperation to free themselves, the trio fooled
Lilin to do a double ambush, meaning to use rock boulders to block them at both
ends. It worked and Lilin was
charging in for the battle while the foursome was pushing the bug of who should
fight against Lilin. (Gojyo chose Goku since he’s the same size as Lilin, Goku
chose Hakkai because he’s good at handling kids, Hakkai chose Gojyo because of
his experience with women, Gojyo chose Sanzo since Lilin’s interested in him.
At that moment, Sanzo menacingly held out his gun at Gojyo’s head). In the
end, Goku turned out be the one to fight Liln.
While watching Lilin fighting, Poochi, Pee-chan & Tama suddenly realized
that they were facing the famous Sanzo’s party. Then, they had an idiotic idea
to fight them in hopes of becoming heroes. Unfortunately for the dim-witted
trio, Lilin’s alarm clock rang & Lilin panicked because it was time for
her to come home. Cheerfully, she removed the rock boulders and bid the foursome
farewell, leaving Poochi, Pee-chan & Tama at their total mercy. (Guess you
know what would happen next). top

It has been 3 months
since the foursome had left for Tenjiku. As they watched the sunset, Sanzo
remarked as long as they kept alive, they would see more sunsets in the future.
In Heaven, Kanzeonbosatsu said the same thing to Nataku Taishi (the same
fighting god who defeated Gyumao) and wondered how long Nataku was going to be
in his stoned, emotionless state. Son Goku had no recollection of his past since
the sin he committed 500 years ago. Not
only him, but also Tenpu, Kenren and Konzen…
The
foursome was at their maximum peak of enduring their boredom till they met the
Iron Demon Army Force. Their leader, Rashu vowed to kill in the name of their
lord, Kougaji. However, in actual fact, it was Gyokumen Koshu who sent them.
Kougaji was very angry with her for sending them to their deaths. Gyokumen Koshu
didn’t care at all since the revival of Gyumao was almost complete. She vilely
reminded Kougaji to collect all the 5 sutras of Heaven & Earth if he wished
to release his mother as soon as possible.
Like
Kougaji had expected, the Iron Demon Army Force were not much of a challenge to
the foursome. Soon, every one of them was killed, including Rashu. Out of his
excitement, Goku put on Rashu’s helmet. The helmet glowed and soon, all the
artillery pieces started to encircle Goku. Sanzo ran forward and grabbed
Goku’s hand, not knowing he had fallen into Rashu’s trap. Soon, Sanzo &
Goku were absorbed into Rashu’s dimension. In Rashu’s dimension, Rashu
intend to control Sanzo and made him submit to Kougaji himself by entering
through his mind.
Outside,
Hakkai and Gojyo heard Goku screaming for Sanzo.
Sanzo
was putting up a good fight against Rashu, who decided to switch techniques
since all human beings were bond to have one weakness. So, he entered in
Sanzo’s past when he formerly known as Koryu. Kyomo Sanzo told Koryu that his
name was associated with Yangzi River, a grand and solemn that reflected
Koryu’s character. When Koryu asked Kyomo Sanzo why did he took him in, Komyo
replied that he had Koryu calling out to him many times. Maybe, someday, Koryu
too, would hear a voice calling out to him.
Outside,
Hakkai & Gojyo were still unable to break the barrier. Gojyo felt that Sanzo
was the only one able to break out since his gun had the ability to destroy the
artillery barrier.
After
the death of Komyo Sanzo, Koryu was crowned as Genjo Sanzo. The elder of the
monastery decided to give Genjo a weapon to protect himself against the demons.
Genjo Sanzo chose the handgun because he could use it to shoot himself when the
time comes. With that information, Rashu used Sanzo’s fears, guilt,
insecurities and inner doubts to weaken Sanzo’s mental strength. Goku could
see Sanzo fading away from him. He screamed. Sanzo heard him. Then, somehow,
Goku was able to reach out and grabbed Sanzo’s hand.
Sanzo
took his gun and told Rashu that though his hands were covered with blood, he
could always wash it away. He shot him, freeing himself & Goku from the
barrier. Hakkai & Gojyo were relived to see them. Sanzo looked at Goku and
said he had heard a voice. Goku looked at him, puzzled.
In
Heaven, Kanzeonbosatsu said though blood could be washed away, people bleed to
live. She told her servant, Jiroshin that the duties of the gods were not to
look down on humans but to witness those who were born to live. Deep down, she
encouraged the foursome to continue their journey to the west even though it’s
a path made of dead bodies. top
